Description

Perfect for:

  • Photographers who want the original SLR that changed the course of photography, with a built-in meter
  • Manual shooters seeking coupled TTL metering paired with an ultra-fast 55mm f/1.2 lens
  • Collectors and enthusiasts building a serious, professional-grade Nikon F-mount system

*JUST SERVICED & FILM TESTED*

Looking for the vintage camera that defined the modern SLR? This is a 1970s made Nikon F fitted with the metered Photomic FTn finder - an all-mechanical, professional 35mm system camera trusted by photojournalists the world over - paired here with the legendary, ultra-fast Nikkor-S Auto 55mm f/1.2 lens. If you're serious about shooting 35mm film and want a coupled light meter without giving up full manual control, this is where the modern Nikon system began.

✔ All-mechanical titanium-foil shutter – A precision, fully mechanical focal-plane shutter runs from 1 second to 1/1000s plus B (bulb) and T (time), so this camera continues working even after 50+ years.

✔ Coupled TTL metering via the Photomic FTn finder – This unit's Photomic FTn prism adds through-the-lens, centre-weighted metering with a classic match-needle display in the viewfinder, so you get real-time exposure guidance while staying fully in manual control.

✔ Ultra-fast Nikkor-S Auto 55mm f/1.2 lens – One of the fastest standard lenses Nikon ever made for the F-mount, this 7-element, 5-group optic delivers dramatic subject separation and genuine low-light capability, with the soft, characterful rendering this legendary lens is known for wide open.

✔ Interchangeable prisms & focusing screens – Beyond the metered Photomic FTn fitted to this unit, the Nikon F system accepts a full range of period finders and 16 interchangeable focusing screens, so the system can grow with you.

✔ Full manual control – Every exposure is set by hand using the meter as a guide, giving experienced shooters complete creative control over aperture, shutter speed and focus.

✔ Single-stroke film advance & mirror lock-up – A smooth single-stroke advance lever, depth-of-field preview and mirror lock-up round out a body designed from the ground up for considered, deliberate 35mm film photography.

This Nikon F Photomic FTn with Nikkor-S Auto 55mm f/1.2 is a rare chance to own the vintage camera that launched Nikon's entire SLR system, with the added convenience of a coupled meter - a fully mechanical, professional-grade 35mm camera for photographers who want to slow down and shoot film the way it was meant to be shot.

Battery Requirement – The Photomic FTn's built-in light meter uses 1x PX625A 1.35V battery (sold separately). The camera's shutter and film advance are fully mechanical and work with no battery fitted - only the meter needs one.

For 'Grade 6 - Fair' Cameras: Minor quirks or functional notes may apply. Please check the ‘Condition & Notes’ section below for full details.

To learn more about our camera grades, please view our Grading Scale.

Grade

Grade: We grade every camera carefully so you can shop with confidence, knowing exactly what you’ll receive. Each one is thoroughly tested to ensure it works as intended, and our grading scale helps you understand the overall condition and any minor imperfections that distinguish it from a like-new example.

  • Grade 10 – Near Perfect: Near-perfect, minimal to no wear, flawless functions, crystal-clear lens.
  • Grade 9 – Excellent: Lightly used, faint scuffs, fully functional, clean lens.
  • Grade 8 – Great: Normal signs of use, minor surface marks, fully functional.
  • Grade 7 – Good: Well-loved with visible wear or small quirks, but everything works as it should.
  • Grade 6 – Fair: Heavier wear and noticeable imperfections. It may also have minor functional quirks or imperfections, but it is fully functional and full of character.

If you’d like more clarity regarding our classifications, please view our grading scale here, or please don't hesitate to reach out to our team — we’re always happy to help!

Usability

Usability: This 1970 Nikon F is fitted with the Photomic FTn metered finder, adding a coupled TTL match-needle meter on top of the original's full mechanical control - paired with the ultra-fast Nikkor-S Auto 55mm f/1.2 lens for dramatic subject separation and low-light capability.

Beginner Friendly?: Not intended as a first camera - exposure is still fully manual, with the meter only providing a needle-based guide, so it suits photographers who already understand manual exposure (or are keen to learn on a classic, metered body) rather than someone wanting a point-and-shoot experience.
